When we told Prince William resident Emma Young that we’d like to her family to be our first Blessings from Curses recipient she responded: “But I’m so lucky.”
And–even though her family of three has been living in a hotel since a fire displaced them in May (read her story of the ordeal), and a September accident left their car totaled and her husband with a concussion–she meant it. Rather than dwelling on the financial and emotional toll of these incidents, she inspired us as she listed blessings ranging from clean water coming from the tap when she brushes her teeth (at said hotel) to the outpouring of support she has received from community members.
After the fire, her first thought was of others: She started GoFundMe campaigns for neighbors also displaced that day, the Thomas and Conteh families, while seeking nothing for her own expenses. That attitude of gratitude and altruism is exactly why Imagine reached out to Emma, a freelance writer who lends her time to a number of local causes, in the first place. We know that any support she receives now will be given back to the community tenfold. Please join us in filling the swear jar, virtually or in person, and help us to do good one bad word at a time.
A swear jar is a great idea; but, if the family needs things like towels and blankets, please contact me. I have items in great condition that I gladly would donate. Nancy Wyatt
